As it is Valentine's Day in New Zealand, I think it is only right that we write about love. The twist on this, however, is that I am not going to ask you to write about a person; instead, I want you to write a love letter to your beloved Knabstrupper. If you know what that is, you are in luck, but if you don’t know, you cannot Google or do research of any kind. Create your bit of writing, and then have a peek at what you have been writing about. I use this exercise often as it generates many laughs and pushes the writer in different ways. You can approach this in any writing medium, whether a poem, flash fiction piece, or mini screenplay. Remember, this is designed to be fun and pushes us to use love language that isn’t too specific, as we don’t know what we are writing about. Go with your heart and commit to it. I cannot wait to see these.

My Knabstrupper
You endangered beautiful beast—
Your spots are your tell-tale heart
The things that set you apart
I know when I feel
Your reins and my heel
In your stirrups I’m free to make art
Riding your back
There is nothing that lacks
I’m full and joyful and free
Knowing your love
Of the sky above
When we ride it’s all that you see
You neigh like your friends
And prance to no end
And gallop then slow to a trot
Your time with me has come to a close
Our ride is now over—not what I chose
If it were up to me
You’d be forever free
To stare at the sky like a feast
